The Santa Fe Ski Basin is about thirty minutes away. You can rent equipment at Alpine Sports in town or wait until you get to the mountain.
There are trails for every kind of hiker here; There are many books, maps, etc. about Santa Fe on the kitchen counter near the front door. Feel free to borrow them for your visit – just remember to return them. The Dale Ball trails are just a short drive from the house. There are wonderful trails up Hyde Park Road and the ski area. Hiking in the Galisteo Basin which is near Lamy and the community of El Dorado affords big open vistas (not for hot weather, though.) There are also many areas for exploration and hiking within about an hour’s drive.
Cristo Rey Church is just down the road. In the late 1930's the eastside of Santa Fe did not have a church. Canyon Road was getting wider and there were about 283 families populating the alfalfa and corn fields up the valley to the mountains. On Sundays, there would be a procession of people walking down the paths to go to the St. Francis de Asissi Cathedral for mass, only to be relinquished to the back of the church, due to social and economic status. This situation got very old for the folks on the eastside and they decided to build their own church.
